Attribution Glitch Warning

I helped warn every client about a Facebook reporting glitch before Facebook announced it

Context

Each client had a Slack channel with the agency team and a weekly working session, and we checked their accounts every day. A daily dashboard pulled every client's results into one report, so we could see movement across all the accounts at once as well as in each one.

Problem

Facebook's attribution went wrong across accounts for a few hours. Some showed double or triple the conversions and some showed half or none, and the bad numbers threw off how the campaigns optimized.

Approach

We saw the problem in client accounts while it was happening, and Facebook confirmed it to us directly before it shared anything publicly. We went into each client's Slack channel, explained what was happening, and told each one how to adjust, based on where their own account stood. We told them again when it was fixed. None of it came out of their weekly hour.

Stack

  • Facebook Ads
  • Daily account checks
  • One daily dashboard across all clients
  • A Slack channel per client

Result

2-3x
conversions misreported

Every client heard about the glitch from the agency, with advice for their own account, before Facebook announced it.

2-3X · CONVERSIONS MISREPORTED

Every client heard from us, with advice for their own account, before Facebook announced the glitch.

Impact

Clients knew which numbers to distrust while the glitch lasted and what to change in their own accounts.

Lessons

Check the numbers before acting on them. Tell the client first when the platform's numbers break, with the fix for their own account.
