Context

Small accounting and professional services firm offering compliance-heavy work (tax, bookkeeping, and advisory) with a skeptical, risk-averse client base. One of a run of high-ticket B2B service businesses I was ramping around then, alongside three marketing agencies, all of them expert at delivery and improvising their own front end.

Problem

Lead flow was lumpy and mostly dependent on referrals. Prospects were wary of big retainers without proof. Marketing was generic ("we do taxes") with no structured way to warm up cold leads.

Approach

Designed a low-friction, $49 diagnostic audit as the front door. The offer: a structured review of their books and systems with a clear, written findings report and recommended fixes. Built the funnel, landing page, and follow-up sequence so the audit naturally led into larger engagements.

Audit-to-upsell flow waterfall. 3 stages: audit, findings, engagement.

$80K
60-day revenue

Roughly $80K in collected revenue in around 60 days, much of it from clients who started with the $49 audit and converted into higher-ticket service packages. That figure sits inside the band this class of client ran: across the high-ticket B2B service businesses I worked with in that stretch, each landed somewhere between $50K and $150K inside 90 days, which was about my ramp-up period with them.

Impact

Transformed "random word of mouth" into a repeatable pipeline. The firm gained a predictable way to start relationships, showcase expertise, and confidently propose bigger projects. It also ended the way these engagements tend to end. Once the pipeline was running, the firm filled up and could not take on more customers, so the work was finished and what I kept was the story.

Lessons

For skeptical buyers in regulated spaces, a de-risked diagnosis beats a hard pitch. When the audit is genuinely useful, the upsell stops feeling like selling and starts feeling like the obvious next step. A front door like this scales right up until delivery capacity becomes the constraint, and in professional services that ceiling arrives fast.

Why this matters to you

Ideal for accountants, lawyers, and consultants who know they close well once they are in a room with the right prospects but struggle to get those first at-bats at scale.

Framework used

The Velvet Rope. The $49 audit as a paid disqualifier. The rope is upstream of the proposal, not at it.
